Braces vs Aligners
Which Orthodontic Treatment Is Right for You?
If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, chances are you’ve wondered:
Should I choose clear aligners or traditional braces?
The good news? You don’t have to decide alone.
At Inner-Smiles Orthodontics in Colorado Springs, Dr. Sheila will walk you through the pros and cons of each option based on your goals, your lifestyle, and your unique smile.
The Basics: Clear Aligners or Braces
Both options straighten teeth, improve bite function, and enhance your smile—but they do it differently.
🦷 Clear Aligners
Clear aligners (like the custom, doctor-designed aligners we use) are removable plastic trays that gently guide your teeth into alignment. This is a hands-on tool that you have to use properly as close to 24 hours a day as possible.
Great for: Those seeking a low-profile look.
Pros:
Nearly invisible
Removable for eating, brushing, and flossing
No food restrictions
Fewer emergency visits (no wires to break)
Ideal for mild to moderate cases
Better for patients who want convenience and aesthetics
Things to consider:
Require consistent wear (22+ hours/day)
Can be lost or forgotten (especially in teens)
Not ideal for every type of movement
May require supportive tools like buttons or elastics
🦷 Metal and Clear Braces
Braces use brackets and wires to apply steady pressure to your teeth. They're a reliable and time-tested option that works in nearly any case.
Great for: Patients of all ages—especially those with complex movements, or those who want predictable results without the need to remember to wear something. Dr. Sheila calls this the “Set it and Forget it” option.
Pros:
Always working (you can’t forget them!)
Great for complex tooth and bite issues
Durable and efficient
Often faster for significant movements
Modern, smaller brackets with less discomfort than you remember
Clear brackets offer a great nearly-invisible option
Things to consider:
Visible on the teeth
Some food restrictions (nothing too sticky or crunchy)
May require a bit more attention to hygiene
Periodic adjustments required
Still Deciding? Here’s What Dr. Sheila Says:
“There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. That’s why we look at each case individually. I’ll show you what’s happening in your bite, where we want the teeth to go, and what’s the most efficient and comfortable way to get there—whether that’s aligners, braces, or both.”
At Inner-Smiles, you won’t be sold on a certain product. You’ll get honest, expert guidance from a board-certified orthodontist who’s seen thousands of cases and knows how to get results that last.
What If I Want the Benefits of Both?
You're in luck. Many of our patients choose hybrid treatment—a combination of braces and clear aligners—so they can get the best of both worlds. For example:
We may start with braces for 4–6 months to get through tricky movements, then switch to aligners for the rest.
Or we may use aligners on the top teeth and braces on the bottom to optimize comfort and control.
It’s all about flexibility and results—and Dr. Sheila will help you choose the most efficient path.
